Mycelium Leather 101: From Farm Waste to Handbag Hardware
Most mushroom farms produce more mycelium biomass than they can sell — stems, root structure, offcuts that would otherwise go straight to compost. This is the raw input for biofabricated leather, and it's the reason mycelium leather production has a fraction of the footprint of both animal leather and PU leather manufacturing.
Mushroom Leather Production: Farm Waste vs Livestock vs Plastic
Livestock leather takes years — raising an animal, then months of chemical tanning. PU leather takes a petrochemical plant. Mycelium leather takes weeks: the mycelium is cleaned, dried, pressed into sheets, then treated to become flexible and water-resistant, without the heavy solvents conventional tanning relies on.
What comes out the other end is a soft-grain, biofabricated leather with real texture variation — no two sheets identical, the same way no two hides are identical in traditional tanning.
